Youth Programs Summit (Pre Con)

Another summer season has come to a close and what better time to come together with our fellow youth programs professionals to reflect upon the rollercoaster that is summer camp. This session is geared toward those running camps in the University of California system, but open to all seasoned and aspiring youth programs professionals.

Desert Oasis: Unleashing Revenue Potential when the Funds are Drying Up

For over 15 years, the pricing for our campus rec programs and services stayed stagnant. Since the pandemic, expenses continue to surge and minimum wage is consistently increasing. This session is to share a systematic approach to developing a plan with your team, proposing it to executive leadership, and implementing a new price structure. Are you seeing a decline in participation across all areas in campus recreation? Are you battling declining enrollment? Let us share how we unlocked our revenue potential for sustainable financial and programmatic growth.

Building Bridges: Adaptive Recreation and Exercise is Medicine on Campus

Discover new ways to serve and engage with underserved students in your recreation programs and activities. The UC Berkeley Recreation & Wellbeing Adaptive Recreation and Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIM-OC) programs focus on reaching students reluctant to participate and supporting them towards enhanced physical and mental well-being. We will share our experience developing a robust, multi-faceted adaptive recreation program including sports, staff training, academic classes, and community partnerships. Our award-winning EIM-OC program, a collaboration among Recreation, Health Services, and the School of Public Health, is at the forefront of making physical activity part of every student’s lifestyle. Together these programs contribute to a recreation environment that feels safe, comfortable, and welcoming for students of all abilities, needs, and interests.

House Cup: Improving Staff Culture Through Healthy Competition

As a newly formed team of professional staff stepping in to supervise over 150 student employees, we were faced with the challenge of breaking down position-based silos and improving our overall staff culture. This presentation will detail our “House Cup” initiative which has aided in a culture shift amongst our student staff team. We will share our approach and implementation of the program as well as discuss future goals and the challenges we faced throughout our inaugural year.

The Dos and Don’ts of Transformative Recreation Renovation Projects

The decision to renovate an exciting collegiate recreation facility is a significant moment in any institution’s trajectory. Whether motivated by growing student population and/or demand, an expanded institutional mission or other factor, these renovation projects can have far-reaching impact that reverberates for generations. This session will unite recreation leaders who have navigated this process at all different scales with design leaders who can speak to the overarching principles that make these projects successful. The presentation will expand the audience’s understandings of the process and equip them with the tools/ knowledge to make better strategic decisions for the future of their facilities, students and campus communities.

Improving Campus Rec through Student Voices & Empowerment

After 6 years, San Francisco State University’s Campus Recreation used assessment and student employee feedback to launch several strategic initiatives to reenergize and reinvigorate the department through a culture change called LIVE G.O.L.D.E.N., launched committees to work on specific areas of the department, and have empowered students to share their voice for the departmental change, all of which trickle to the impact of a sense of belonging for the campus community. Come learn about our model for change and how you can implement similar strategies within your department.

Law and Order: Work From Home

In this episode of Law and Order the CRS unit finds themselves in a court case about working from home. This interactive court case will present evidence (data), their case (highlight impacts), and engage in the prosecution and defense (provide conversations tools) of working from home. What will the jury decide? What will the judge’s sentence be? What is the future of working from home?

The Importance of Mentorship in Development

In this session, you will learn about why mentorship is important in the field of campus rec, how to use mentorship to develop, and how to be a mentor to others. We will talk about the challenges of belonging and how mentorship helps recruit and retain quality individuals in the field of campus recreation.

The Hidden Secrets of Fusion

Let’s dive into the tips & tricks of the Fusion software to take your Fusion skills to the next level. In this session, we will go over how to best navigate areas of Fusion such as member profile management, the best reporting view tricks, communication tasks criteria, and marketing 101 with the Member Portal, HTML, and FusionGO. No sweat if you aren’t a Fusion Champion or a day-to-day Fusion user, we guarantee to have one tidbit of information you can take away from this session. Haven’t updated to our newest release? Maximizing Well-Being

During this session we will look at ways we can optimize our staff and leaders on the maximizing well-being in the workplace. We will dive deep into what Burnout means in the workplace, We will look at some of the root causes of employee burnout, and explore some effective evidence based strategies and practices from Dr. Santos, professor of Psychology and host of the Happiness Podcast on understanding and enhancing our Well-Being to help us better show up for work and personal lives.

Understanding Equitable Mindfulness and Putting it into Practice

In this workshop we will discuss the roots and concepts of mindfulness from multiple cultural lenses. We will then take these equitable mindfulness principles and present a process that will assist participants in providing a space for mindfulness, regardless of the setting.

Recreation-Driven Wellness: a UC San Diego Case Study

This session will look at how establishing what recreation driven wellness means to a university, can align campus university entities to focus on being intentional with programming + facility design that supports their unique campus culture of wellbeing and student success. Through the case study of the UC San Diego Wellness Study, we will explore how systemic university structure can be fine tuned to create partnerships of entities focused on wellbeing at minimized cost, time and investment that will lay the foundations for the success of farther term campus strategies.

The Power of Inclusion without Isolation: How to Maximize Diverse Student Involvement through Authentic Engagement

As campus recreation professionals, we are always looking for ways to ensure we reach, connect, and engage all demographics of our campus community through our programming opportunities. The presenter will walk through how to properly assess and integrate programs utilizing the equity lens and authentic engagement through intentional campus partnerships to ensure inclusive program opportunities do not become isolating to our diverse and underrepresented groups on campus. Participants will have the opportunity answer the question of “are my inclusion efforts truly isolating or inclusive”.

Body Positive at The Beach: Heaping students overcome conflicts with their physical bodies to increase feelings of self-worth to lead healthier, more purposeful lives

Body Positive at The Beach is an eight-week series that helps students overcome conflicts with their bodies. It is built on the foundation of practicing intuitive self-care, cultivating self-love, exploring one’s own unique and authentic beauty, and building community. Participants have called this program life-changing. In this presentation, we will share the results of our program, discuss how to bring a Body Positive program to your institution, and create a more compassionate campus community.

DEI Roundtable

Join fellow Region VI members to discuss various aspects of the Diversity Equity and Inclusion in campus recreation. This roundtable will be a focused group discussion around the DEI opportunities, challenges, perspectives and review results of the DEI Professional Development Survey for Region VI. Come ready to share your experience and learn from your peers and provide feedback on how we can enhance your position.

Join fellow Region VI members to discuss various aspects of the Associate Director/Director (AD) role in campus recreation. This roundtable will be a focused group discussion around the AD/Director role opportunities, challenges, perspectives and review of the AD/Director Professional Development Survey for Region VI that went out August 1st -31st. Come ready to share your experience and learn from your peers and provide feedback on how we can enhance your position.

Join this roundtable as we discuss current topics and best practices in collegiate Club Sports. Our hope for this session is for all attendees to walk away with a small cohort with whom they can connect and share information throughout the upcoming academic year.
